Teaching Children About the Fun & Importance of Dentistry

When it comes to dentistry and children, it can sometimes be a difficult process. At Richmond Dental, we recommend that parents start as early as possible, teaching your child about dental care, talking to them about the importance of visiting the dentist and even practicing proper dental care at home.

Scheduling Your Child’s First Appointment

At Richmond Dental we recommend that children visit us for their first appointment when their first tooth erupts. If not possible, your child should visit us at least by their 1st birthday. Scheduling your child’s first appointment as early as possible can get them used to professional dental care and allow our pediatric dentist near you to evaluate and monitor their developing smile.

Practicing Proper Dental Care

We actually recommend starting at home dental care before your child even has their first tooth. We recommend using a soft washcloth to gently wipe and massage the gums, this can help to clean the mouth, promote blood flow to the gums and get your child used to dental care. As their smile develops, we recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride.

Talking About the Dentist

A great way to reduce your child’s risk of dental anxiety is to get them used to the idea of the dentist. We recommend talking about healthy smiles, dental care and even the dentist with your child daily once you have scheduled their appointment. Do not discuss drills, shots or anything scary, simply let them know they will be visiting the dentist who is going to help them have a healthy smile!

If your child likes any characters or shows, finding videos or even books that include dentistry can be a big help. YouTube can be a wonderful resource for finding such videos.
