Misconceptions About Porcelain Veneers

If you are thinking about getting veneers, you may hear mixed reviews. Some people think that they look unnatural, and others praise them as the best way to easily give you a beautiful smile. So which is it? We should talk a little bit about three different misconceptions that people have about porcelain veneers and what the truth really is.

But first, what are porcelain veneers and what do they treat? Veneers are thin, translucent, porcelain shells that are applied to your teeth to change their color or shape. They typically cover the natural face of the teeth, transforming your smile as much, or as little, as you like.

They are commonly used to fix unsightly problems like cracks, chips, yellow teeth, strangely shaped teeth, or gaps.

Common Misconceptions

  • The Application is Painful. A topical anesthetic is applied to the area that is worked on so that the patient can be comfortable. During the process, a small amount of the teeth will be filed down, so without the anesthetic, it would be painful. As comfort is a top priority, though, the patient is numbed to the point that they would feel no pain whatsoever!
  • The Entire Tooth Must Be Filed Down Before Veneers Can Be Placed. While some of the natural tooth is filed down so that the veneers can be placed in a natural way, the amount that must be filed down is different from patient to patient. Typically, the amount that is filed away is minimal and barely noticeable.
  • Veneers Are Unnaturally White and Noticeable. Veneers are completely customizable. This means that the shape, color, and thickness can be changed so that they look completely natural. This misconception may come up because clients request to have strangely white teeth. Your dentist will give you the smile that you want, but if you want a natural, beautiful looking smile, veneers can be used to accomplish that.
